Coconut Chutney

Coconut chutney is a South Indian spicy chutney side dish and condiment, a speciality common in North Malabar. This is a coconut stew mixed with other spices and served with Idli, Dosa, vada and even with cooked rice. This is also called as Kopra Chutney.

Ingredients

  • Grated Coconut – 1 cup
  • Roasted Chana – ½ cup
  • Green Chillies – 3-4
  • Ginger – ¼ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Dry red chillies – 2
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves – 10-12

Method

  1. Grind coconut, chana, green chillies, ginger and salt together with little water (water as per the thickness of the chutney you need).
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds, as they splutter add curry leaves and dry red chillies.
  3. Add this to the coconut paste and mix well.
  4. Serve with idli, dosa, vada, upma, pongal, etc…….
